Adolescents

The U.S. Surgeon General released a report in Spring 2023, which highlighted the worsening mental health of children and teens. It was described as the most significant public health crisis of our time.

In 2020 and 2021, suicide was the third leading cause of death for kids and teens aged 10 to 19.  In a survey, around 20 percent of high school students said they thought about suicide in the past year. Another 15.3 percent made a plan, and 9 percent made an attempt. During the pandemic, NYS saw and increase of over 30 percent of suicide-related Emergency Department visits for adolescent girls.
