Working Age Men

Despite relatively little public attention, the high suicide rates and burden carried among working aged men is well established nationally and in New York State. View our recent population profile on suicide risk among working-age men in New York. Working age men have a suicide rate more than double the overall jurisdiction rate and nearly triple the state rate. While there are many situations, stressors, and factors that can be considered, data suggests that male decedents, aged 25-64, are overall less likely to disclose mental health issues with others and less likely to seek treatment when they arise. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, changing the culture of the workplace and ensuring employees feel their mental health and wellness are supported are integral parts of addressing the issue in this population.
